glasgow school of art: an inspirational visit in 2014 (gallery)

The Glasgow School of Art on Renfrew Street in Glasgow, Scotland, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and built between 1897 and 1909. These pictures are from February 2014; it is now known as the Mackintosh Building.

The library’s exterior at the Glasgow School of Art. Although we couldn’t take pictures inside, the interior of the library brought me to tears. You can see the roof of what is now known as the O2 ABC music venue behind.

With this weekend’s devastating news about the Glasgow School of Art, I was reminded of my visit to the Charles Rennie Mackintosh masterwork four years ago and propelled to post a gallery. Few buildings move me in the way this one has since I was first introduced to it through architectural history courses many moons ago. Just a few short months before the 2014 fire, I stood in the center of the magnificent library. It drew me to tears that day. The loss of the original library interior was heartbreaking; the near complete loss of the building as a whole today is simply beyond comprehension. Although our photos were hampered by both the rain and the construction of an abominable building by Steven Holl across the street, they remind me of the wonder I experienced that day. All my best to the school as they begin to recover from this latest conflagration.
